First they overhauled their entire universe and launched the “New 52″.
This has actually worked out – so far – and sales are very healthy so enough said.
Now however, they’ve redesigned their company logo and set off a division in their fan base.

I can see what they’re going for here; there’s a Watchmen inspired logo and Green Lantern emerald power logo but the rest have me stumped. Still, it’s their company, they can do what they like with their logo. I just hope they don’t pull a “New Coke” and piss off their fans before returning to the status quo a few months later.
Take a close look at the DC logos below: you can see a smooth evolution between designs through the years, something that is now missing. The new looks suggest the “D” is peeling back from the funky “C”.

Some observers are suggesting the new logos are symbolic of a regime change at the comic book giant, I hope this isn’t the case; company politics shouldn’t spill over to the finished product… ever. Parent company Warner Bros. may be sending a message to their #1 competitor, Marvel Comics owners Disney.
If the boys in suits want Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse want to duke it out, fine. Just keep it in the funny pages, won’t you, boys?
Other observers are suggesting someone simply fell asleep at the switch and forgot that a comic book company’s logo should reflect their fun and creative attitude.
Personally, I love this one…

I like the Google graphic, that’s pretty awesome !
I know! They need something like that; it’s Old School Awesome!
The Google image is awesome and I loved the comparison to New Coke. For your sake, I hope they avoid this mistake!
As do I…
*sigh* I understand updating your branding, but companies often go overboard in pandering to a crowd that they think is their base only to find out after the fact that they were wrong all together.
With Coke, they changed their formula to taste more like Pepsi which won in every single taste test, not realizing that Pepsi wins on first sip, but not on drinking a whole can. They also didn’t realize that it was also the Americana aspect of Coke that appealed to so many of their consumers. They learned the hard way.
I hope DC doesn’t follow in their footsteps…
I think they are really clever, but I know what you mean about sticking with one logo.
My father created the American Family Insurance logo in the 1960′s! I have been trying to get someone from the company to interview him since is turning 86 this year!
Why hasn’t someone paid him the respect he deserves? That’s a terrible thing!
I’m with you on this.
I looked at those new logo’s and all I could think of was… they have changed their name to “c” comics???? I didn’t even notice the D at all.
I think it silly that they’d make such a drastic change like this. Die hard comic fans have their heart and soul in a lot of tradition and this change…. well I hope comic fans don’t mind!
Some of them certainly will…
One would think that since what was old is new again, they would go “retro” and use the 1972 logo.
👍
That’s a great plan, Drew!
A new Coke look is never to be sniffed at.
I apologize…
That Google logo is just awesome.
I know, right?
