#180: The Truth Behind The Rise Of “The Vampire Nation”

Long-time readers know how I feel about the vampire craze but bear with me, this isn’t the usual “Vampires Suck” post I revel in.

Let’s talk about the true origins of the vampire phenomenon, shall we?

Yes, young girls – and not so-young girls – love watching Damon, Edward, Stefan and their ilk for their polished sexuality and the fantasy element they infuse in their otherwise humdrum lives.

But there’s more going on here people… much more. Look at the vampire legend closely…

  • You become incredibly strong and agile.
  • A keen sense of fashion seems to come naturally to you.
  • As does good hair.
  • The art of the “sullen, soulful look” becomes second nature.
  • You brood – A LOT.
  • You have to drain the life from the living, but that doesn’t seem to register in the brains of these awestruck vamp fans.

 Here’s the kicker, though…

YOU NEVER AGE… NOT A DAY!

And that’s what it’s really all about, my friends. Who wouldn’t want to live forever? Sounds great on paper, right?

Some of you are skeptical, but admit it, no one wants to face the negative, inevitable aspects of the aging process.

A life of eternal youth is overflowing with the prospect of romance and adventure and so millions of squealing young girls, desperate housewives, crazy cougars, etc. are inexorably drawn to the vampire myth like rednecks to a trailer park.

Now that I’ve figured it out perhaps I can downgrade the vampire craze on my list of personal pet peeves.

Then again, maybe not. Of course. my objections would be lessened if the majority of the focus was cast in this direction…

  1. Vampire Diaries…another guilty pleasure. Can’t get enough. haha

  2. Those two really looked the part at the People’s Choice Awards, They looked “hungry!”
I just got my hair cut off and now I know that I should just keep it wet all day and I will look exactly like her!! .

  3. where’s Buffy when you need her?
Also, I’m not sure eternal youth is such a good thing. after all, what it comes down to is that you live forever while everyone you love dies. And then you get to meet new people and fall in love with a new person…and watch them die. And so on, and so on, ad infinitum.

  4. The brooding in these shows is soooooo annoying. Even Angel in Buffy- I was ready to pull my finger nails out with pliers he got so bad. But then he lost his soul and I fell in love with him. Even Stefan has become much more interesting since he lost himself.

I do think there should be more lady kick butt vampires. And yes, it does seem as if the vampire world is stacked in the woman column.

  5. There’s something about ‘bad boys’ that girls can’t resist. I’m not so sure about vice versa though. And I would hate to live here on earth for ever!

  6. Give me Christopher Lee hamming it up anyday – love the post.

  7. I could read a lot more and watch more movies if I lived forever…just a thought.

  8. You’ve made me see the vampire craze in a whole new light.

  9. Personally, I love vampires. I would absolutely be one if I had a choice. Of course, I’ve worked out the morality by deciding that I would have a cabal of lovely men to donate blood and lots of vampy sex at a moment’s notice. You know, give to get and all that ;-)

But, I will say, the absolute best vampire fiction of all time is Bloodshift by Garfield Reeves-Stevens. He has a very unique take on the vampire origin (all science, no demons or anything like that.)

  10. I have to admit that I am guilty of a mild vampire obsession. Although, I’ve never watched “The Vampire Diaries.” I think it is the danger aspect of the vampires that I find attractive. It is an escape from the ordinary day to day reality of cubicle land. I find your lack of enthusiam about vampires refreshing…and hilarious. :)

  11. Yeah I think you are pretty right..the “stooped age” is quite a reason.
And that is why I guess girls are more attracted to this vampire hoopla, after all they are the sex obsessed with age.
And “A keen sense of fashion seems to come naturally to you”..that’s so funny and accurate indeed.

  13. I forgot to give you a little video I found… :)
