#193: Holiday Music!

My wife loves holiday music.

I cannot stress this enough: she loves it like a child loves her dolls. Various radios in our home blast Christmas songs virtually non-stop all season.

These songs make me want to kill myself with a cheese grater.

Basically there are only a handful of Christmas compositions, but they have been covered by everyone from Mariah Carey to The McKenzie Brothers! And some of these songs have been mangled beyond recognition by these “artists”.

Still, there is a large portion of the population that loves to wrap themselves in the trappings of the holiday season and music is an essential part of the ritual.

It just gets sooo annoying at times. I mean. twenty-four hours of this dreck? For months at a time?

Personally, Dan Fogelberg’s Same Old Lang Syne is the only holiday song I truly enjoy, and many would argue it isn’t actually a Christmas song at all.

That’s probably why I like it.

  1. Hook … I think I love your wife. She knits, she listens to holiday music … could she be my long lost twin????

I’ve been listening to Pandora’s Rockin Holiday Radio almost non-stop at work. (I’m not allowed to at home ;-( because I live with a chrismas music scrooge, but I adapt.

My absolute favorite though is It’s a Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi

  2. I feel your pain. If I have to hear that Christmas Shoes song one more time I may rip my ears off.

  3. it means you wife is enjoying the christmas preparations to the fullest!
join her too and make it memorable :)

  4. I love the oldie Christmas Carols, Bing, Frank, Louis, Louis… and David Bowie. They are the only ones I play. And since I live by myself… I make sure my neighbours can hear them and me belting out the lyrics too!!

  5. I’m with you on this one. I really can’t stand holiday music on any day other than Christmas/Christmas Eve and even then…

  6. Boney M – I’ve had a palpitation!

  7. I play music from a group that sings English carols from the 1700s and 1800s. There is no one but the dogs to tell me it’s annoying.

  8. I’m on this wagon with you. One of my fav stations in the area starts playing non-stop Christmas music the day after Thanksgiving… needless to say I tune out for the next month. I have to really be in the mood… or I do my TUNING out routine. I don’t mind one song every now and then, but there is a limit.

  9. I like A Twisted Christmas by Twisted Sister, Gwar has a done a few holiday tunes and my StepDad always plays a Jamaica Christmasall reggae stuff…I love the classics to but it’s fun to mix it ip
