The New Hollywood Craze: Adult Fairy Tales?

Before you get too excited, I’m talking about actual fairy tales, not the xxx variety.

People have been complaining for years that Hollywood’s creative minds have run so short on ideas that they just keep recycling past glories. When you look at the fact that out of all of last year’s blockbusters, only 20% were original stories and not sequels or remakes, it seems to be true.

Trailers already running for Red Riding Hood, an attempt to merge the classic tale with the current werewolf craze partly inspired by Twilight. Yet another reason to hate vampires!

Now that the genie is out of the bottle, so to speak, they’ll be no putting it back in. Snow White and the Huntsman will star Kristen (I swear I only look stoned!) Stewart as the fair maiden targeted for death by huntsman the evil queen Charlize Theron. Viggo Mortensen plays the huntsman who takes pity on the Fairest Of Them All and trains her to kick evil-queen ass!

That’s the premise, I swear.

And that’s not all. The Brothers Grimm: Snow White will give Julia Roberts a shot at box office redemption after a few lean years. I know she made Eat, Pray, Love, but that sucked if you possess a “y” chromosome.

We can even look forward to a “re-imagining” of the Wizard of Oz with James Franco as the Wizard and Mila (Did I or didn’t I go down on Natalie Portman in Black Swan?) Kunis! Mila Kunis will be the Wicked Witch of the West before she was wicked, so just a menopausal witch I guess.

At any rate, Sam Raimi is directing so it may be worth watching, but the story precedes the fairy tale we all grew up with so we can expect a much more fearsome breed of flying monkey. I’m guessing a 3-D version with blood-dripping talons. Real kiddie stuff.

Beastly opens in a few weeks and is basically Beauty and the Beast in high school and is Vanessa Hudgens‘ chance to propel herself back up the popularity charts. It looks like the stars have decided the key to reclaiming fame lies in mining the stories of childhood.

We’ll see if they find a happy ending, so to speak.

  1. Humm, who is the woman on the poster? I can’t recall her name, but as an actor, she has been good in every role.

  2. Hi Mr. Hook!
So, you don’t like bacon [I’d give a glance at “Just who is the Hook?”… what’s the matter with it?… Kidding!
I do agree with you: Holywood is trying to mess around with the fairy tales wich we grew up reading, listenin, watching… And I think you may agree, too: who needs a vampire like Patinson’s when we once had Bela Lugosi’s Dracula?!
Now, Snow White performed by Kirsten Stewart? I would regret being one of the poor dwarves… I dilike very much these fashion-glittered vampires and the crew wich came aroud with them -so boring.
And, about your remarks on the human condition, prompted by the performances of the famous people or not so famous or wannabe famous people: these people are taken seriously the maxim that says that we are just criatures, limited per definition… don’t you think?
    Thanks for your witz!!

  3. It is interesting to see fairy tales coming back to the top of adult entertainment. (If only the studios weren’t doing such a crap job of it…) They were certainly intended for a mixed or adult audience when they were conceived. One of the older versions of Snow White ends with the Evil Step-Queens feet being clapped into hot irons as she is made to dance until she dies. At the lucky Princess’s wedding no less! Those villains certainly didn’t sparkle.

  4. Funny/informant/entertaining as always Hook!

But seriously, I’m pretty tired of fairy tale re-hashes. I really, really wish that hollywood knew how to come up with original story lines….sigh

  5. They said there are only 13 original stories ever told, and that everything is a variation of one of these:

IE: Boy meets Girl, Boys likes Girl, Boy screws in up, Girl writes Boy off, Boy gets redemption, ect. ect…

The fact that this is becoming what looks to be nothing more than an unofficial prequel to Twilight is disturbing. What a pile of excrement.

  6. I think this could be an interesting way to go – if done right. We’ve seen tons of fairy tale movies geared towards kids, the stories changed of course to fit that requirement; but as someone said already, some of the “innocent victims” were pretty evil in what punishments they meted out to their abuser. Sure, the evil queen may have deserved the hot iron shoe punishment, but that’s a harsh thing for Snow White to think of (if she did, I have not read that version). So, darker (another recent popular thing in Hollywood), more adult fairy tales might be interesting. Hopefully they will be. Not saying I’ll be seeing it for sure, but I might.

    • I may see some of them as well, but my expectations are low.

      • Oh, I definitely would not have high expectations for them. I don’t have that for many movies that come out. It would be nice not to have to doubt everything that Hollywood comes out with for once. Like that new Matt Damon movie I can’t remember the name of, reminds me of Dark City, with of course, a few differences. Infinite articles could be written about this.

      • It’s called The Adjustment Bureau and you’re right about the similarities to Dark City.

  7. Ciao! Just came across your blog as I was comment surfing. I used to watch the Oscars with my Mom every yr as a kid. Loved it then, can’t tolerate it now. Way too much hype, for not decent films.
